Harley and Dexter came to us in 2012 from Beagle Welfare in Kent. They were about 5 years old and quite obese at 21 and 20 kgs, respectively.
Within the year, they were both down to a healthy weight though their beagle tendencies never left them!
We enjoyed camping and exploring various places in the UK with them. I have memories of them racing along the sandy beach on the North-East coast when they ran into a rock pool which surprised them both as they were never fond of water. In their younger days, although they were never into toys, they did enjoy a good chase around the garden playing “bitey face”.
Sadly Dexter developed a tumour which was inoperable, and in June 2020, when Dexter would have been about 12, we had to say goodbye to him. Harley became quite nervous on his walks as an only dog, and so we adopted another dog which solved the problem, although the relationship between Harley and the new rescue was never going to be the same as with Dexter.
Harley, although with a few health issues, continued to enjoy his walks and, of course, his food for a few more years, often being mistaken for a much younger dog whilst out, although his ginger colouring had faded significantly. At the beginning of June 2023, his mobility took a sudden downturn and he was unable to go out on his walks as his legs were giving way. After about a month, with his condition worsening, we made the difficult decision to say goodbye.
We enjoyed the years we had with Harley and Dexter and the memories they made and the one comfort is that they are both together again.
