Rupert – Looking for the Right Home
Rupert is a 2½-year-old tan and white male Beagle. He is 19 inches tall and weighs 20kg.
Rupert is a lovely young Beagle who needs a home that can provide the right environment for him to thrive. He would be happiest in a quieter home with less coming and going and without children. He would particularly benefit from living with other dogs, as he enjoys canine company.
He currently lives with another dog and also enjoys spending time with other dogs at daycare.
Training & Behaviour
Rupert is housetrained and has attended training classes. He walks on a figure-of-eight lead and can be left for around four hours.
He is not crate trained in the home, but travels extremely well and is very good in his crate when travelling.
Rupert is not currently considered reliable enough to be let off lead.
He can be destructive with his toys and has a tendency to steal items. These cannot always be taken from him safely, but he will swap items for food, so this is something that needs to be managed appropriately.
Behaviour Around People
Rupert has had two incidents involving family members where he has snapped and bitten, this either has involved food or disturbing him whilst asleep and he will therefore need an experienced home where his boundaries are understood and managed carefully.
For this reason, Rupert is looking for a child-free home.
Other Dogs
Rupert is described as being very sociable with dogs and would like to live with other dogs. He currently does so and enjoys playing with dogs at daycare.
However, he can be reactive towards large black dogs, and although he is fine around other dogs on lead approximately 90% of the time, he can react on occasions. His new owners would need to understand and manage this appropriately.
Cats
Rupert cannot live with cats, as he would chase them.
Food
Rupert is fed Skinners Working Dog food. He does have some food-related boundaries and should not have food taken away from him. His owners should continue to manage this carefully rather than testing his tolerance.
His Ideal Home
Rupert is looking for:
- An adult-only home
- A relatively quiet, settled environment with less coming and going
- Owners who understand Beagle behaviour and are confident managing his boundaries
- Other friendly dogs to provide companionship
- A home without cats
- Secure outdoor areas, as he is not reliable off lead
- Someone willing to continue his training and work positively on his reactions to certain dogs and his behaviour around possessions and food
Rupert sleeps happily in his own bed in his owners’ bedroom.
Rupert is a young Beagle who clearly enjoys canine company, and finding him the right environment will be particularly important. His previous incidents with family members mean that his new home must be prepared to manage him responsibly and give him the space and boundaries he needs.
