Molly – Looking for Her New Home
About Molly
Molly is a very loving, affectionate and playful young Beagle who adores people. She loves her toys, spending time in the garden and cuddling up on the sofa.
Her family have made the extremely difficult decision to look for a new home because Molly is struggling to settle with the other dogs in the household. Despite working with a trainer and taking Molly to doggy daycare to help with socialisation, she continues to relentlessly pester and target the other dogs.
Molly currently lives with two male dogs. She particularly targets Teddy, a gentle 2-year-old Cockapoo, repeatedly jumping on him and biting at his ears, neck and legs. She will deliberately approach him when he is resting, sit on his head or pester him until he moves. Teddy has become frightened and has started hiding under furniture to escape from her.
She has displayed similar behaviour towards a younger female West Highland Terrier belonging to the family.
Her owners feel that Molly would be happiest as the only dog, where she can receive plenty of attention and have an experienced owner who understands Beagles and can help her learn appropriate manners.
Training & Behaviour
Molly has had one-to-one training with her owner’s dog trainer and was doing well during the sessions. At home, however, her owners find her much more difficult to manage and she can bark and ignore commands.
She pulls on lead, particularly when walking with other dogs, as she gets excited and wants to be at the front.
Molly is not yet housetrained and currently uses puppy pads.
She was crate trained in her previous home but has not been crate trained in her current home.
Molly cannot currently be left alone. She becomes upset and will chew anything she can reach, including phone charging cables.
She has travelled in the car but may have an accident.
She has never been let off lead, so her recall is currently unknown.
Garden & Destructive Behaviour
Molly is extremely inquisitive. Although her current garden has 6ft fencing and is described as fully secure, her owners recommend that her new home has a secure garden with high fencing.
She is destructive if left unattended and will chew items within reach.
She also enjoys stealing washing, although she is happy for items to be removed from her mouth.
People & Children
Molly has never shown aggression towards people.
She has spent time around children both in her previous home and with her current family. Her previous owner said that Molly was rehomed because she would jump up and accidentally scratch their younger child.
Since being with her current family, she has been supervised around children and has been calm and friendly.
Because Molly is still a very excitable puppy who jumps and mouths/chews things, any contact with children should continue to be carefully supervised.
Other Dogs
This is the most important consideration when looking for Molly’s new home.
Molly is generally fine meeting and greeting dogs on lead. She can be a little nervous initially but has not shown aggression in these situations.
However, living with other dogs has proved very difficult. She persistently targets dogs in the home, particularly those who are calm and do not tell her when enough is enough. Her current family believe she would be much happier as an only dog.
She has attended doggy daycare as part of her socialisation, but she has not been allowed off lead around other dogs outside of this setting.
Cats
Molly’s behaviour around cats is unknown, as she has not been tested with them.
Food
Molly is very food motivated and will try to jump up and steal food while people are eating. This will need continued training and management.
She is currently fed Royal Canin Puppy dry food, with Pooch & Mutt and Lily’s Kitchen wet food being introduced. She is fed at approximately 6am and 4.45pm.
Health
Molly has an umbilical hernia, which she has had since birth. Her vet has checked it and advised that it can be left until she is spayed, provided it does not cause her any problems.
What Molly Loves
Molly is a fun-loving young Beagle who enjoys:
- Playing with her toys
- Garden time
- Cuddling on the sofa
- Spending time with people
- Attention and affection
- Food and treats
- Exploring and being inquisitive
She sleeps in her own bed in her owners’ bedroom.
Molly’s Ideal Home
Molly needs a home that can provide patience, consistency and experienced guidance. Ideally:
- She would be the only dog
- Her new owners would have experience with Beagles or energetic young dogs
- Someone would be at home for much of the time initially, as she currently cannot cope with being left alone
- Her owners would be prepared to continue her training and work on settling, recall, lead manners, jumping and appropriate behaviour
- She would have a secure, high-fenced garden
- She would have plenty of exercise, enrichment and mental stimulation
- Children, if present, would need to be supervised carefully
- Her new family would be prepared for the fact that she is not yet housetrained
Molly is a beautiful, affectionate young Beagle who has lots of love and personality to give. Her current family have clearly tried hard to help her settle, including professional training and doggy daycare, but living with other dogs has not worked for her. They believe that finding Molly a home where she can be the only dog, receive plenty of attention and have experienced guidance will give her the best opportunity to develop into the happy, well-mannered adult Beagle she has the potential to become.
