Dave struggles significantly with being left alone. He will bark and whine if left for more than a few minutes, so he is looking for a home where someone is around most of the time or where gradual separation training can be continued patiently.
He walks reasonably well on lead but, like many Beagles, follows his nose enthusiastically and can pull when something catches his interest. He enjoys secure off-lead exercise but has typical Beagle recall limitations if he picks up an exciting scent.
Behaviour and Personality
Dave is an affectionate dog who loves interaction and play. He particularly enjoys:
- Chasing balls
- Tug games with ropes
- Walking with other dogs
- Sniffing and exploring
- Relaxing close to his people
He currently goes on regular group walks with a professional dog walker and gets along well with the other dogs in the group.
Dave can be vocal and excitable around other dogs, especially on lead or when seeing them from the car. His barking is usually frustration and excitement rather than aggression, but his size and volume can sometimes make people wary until they meet him.
Resource Guarding
Dave can guard high-value items and food around other animals. Feeding times need to be managed carefully, and he should always be fed separately from other pets.
He has also shown guarding behaviour around prized items such as bones or stolen objects and may raise his lip if challenged directly. Items should never be forcibly removed from him, and positive trade-based management is recommended.
Escape and Scent Drive
Like many Beagles, Dave is driven strongly by scent. If there is a gap in fencing or an interesting smell to investigate, he will try to follow it. A secure garden is essential.
He could live with another dog provided feeding and high-value items are carefully managed. He has lived alongside another dog successfully.
He can live with cats, although he may chase them playfully indoors.
Health Information
Dave is currently healthy. A few years ago he experienced cruciate ligament problems which were successfully managed with medication and rest, and he has had no ongoing issues since.
