Bertie is a bright, energetic young Beagle who is looking for a calm, experienced home committed to helping him continue his progress with positive, reward-based training. He is a friendly and affectionate dog at heart, but he has experienced instability and inconsistent handling in previous homes, which has left him confused, anxious, and unsure of people’s intentions at times.

Since coming into care, Bertie has made encouraging progress. Given time to decompress and supported with gentle handling, enrichment, games, and positive interactions, he has begun to build trust and show his fun-loving personality. He enjoys human company, loves interaction, and can be incredibly affectionate once he feels safe.

Bertie is currently in his adolescent phase, which means his emotions and frustration levels can become heightened. When overstimulated or worried, he can struggle to make good choices and may react by jumping up, grabbing clothing, barking, or guarding items he values. He has previously mouthed and lunged in situations where he felt insecure or overwhelmed, though these incidents did not cause puncture injuries. Because of this history, Bertie will need experienced adopters who understand canine body language and are prepared to continue his behavioural support.

He thrives when his needs are properly met. Bertie is an active Beagle who will need plenty of mental stimulation, enrichment, sniffing opportunities, and structured exercise every day. He loves games, interactive play, scent work, and learning through positive reinforcement. He would likely excel in activities such as man-trailing or scent work classes.

Bertie enjoys the company of other dogs and generally interacts well, especially with dogs similar in size or larger who are calm and confident. He could potentially live with another suitable dog following careful introductions. He cannot live with cats or small animals due to chase behaviour.

Around people, Bertie can initially be nervous, especially around men or fast movements, but once comfortable he becomes affectionate and playful. New adopters will need to allow him to approach at his own pace and avoid forcing interaction. He responds very well to calm, patient handling and benefits from having choice and space.

Bertie is crate-averse due to previous negative experiences and should not be crated in his new home. He can also be sensitive to loud noises, busy environments, and sudden changes in routine, so he would suit a quieter household in a calmer location rather than a busy town or city environment.

Because of his behavioural history and sensitivity, Bertie is looking for:

  • An adult-only home
  • Experienced, patient adopters
  • A calm household with routine and structure
  • A secure garden with 6ft fencing
  • Owners committed to ongoing positive training and behavioural support
  • Plenty of exercise, enrichment, and companionship

Bertie is not a “plug and play” dog, but for the right person he has enormous potential. He is intelligent, affectionate, playful, and eager to bond with people who understand him. With time, patience, and consistent support, Bertie deserves the chance to finally feel safe, secure, and settled in a permanent home.
