Arlo
Arlo is a 5-year-old male tricolour Beagle, standing approximately 16.5 inches and weighing 13.6kg. He is a handsome, affectionate boy who loves being with his people and is particularly fond of cuddles, belly rubs and following his favourite person around the house.
About Arlo
Arlo is fully housetrained and crate trained. He sleeps in his crate at night, although his crate is always available to him during the day as a place where he can choose to rest.
He walks very well on lead and is used to both a collar and harness. He can be walked using a waist lead and prefers walking on the inside of the pavement. He is also good off lead and generally stays close to his person, with treats used to reinforce his recall.
Arlo is accustomed to being left as part of a routine and can be left for around 4 hours. He normally has a walk before his owner leaves and a dog walker visits during the day. He may bark or howl briefly when first left but settles within a few minutes.
He travels very well and has enjoyed holidays and road trips, as well as travelling on buses and trains. When travelling with another dog, he needs to be introduced to the car in the right order as he can guard the boot if put in first.
Arlo’s personality and boundaries
Arlo is a very loving dog, but he does need an experienced owner who understands and respects his boundaries.
He does not like being disturbed when sleeping or having people get into his face. If he is uncomfortable, he will growl to communicate this. His warnings must be respected and he should never be physically moved when he is resting. If asked calmly to get off a sofa or bed, he will generally respond to a verbal instruction and gesture.
He is very affectionate with his people, will paw for belly rubs, loves cuddling and likes to follow his favourite person around the house.
Food and resource guarding
Arlo is very food motivated and will take opportunities to steal food from bins, bags, pockets, plates and other accessible places. He has even discovered that unattended cups of tea or coffee are worth investigating.
Non-food items can generally be exchanged for a biscuit, but food-related items can be more difficult. His owners have found that swapping rather than physically taking items away works best.
He is currently fed AVA Weight Management twice a day, around 7am and between 7pm and 8pm.
Other dogs
Arlo has previously lived with another dog but would probably be better as an only dog.
He has never shown physical aggression towards random dogs. When out, he may bark or growl at approaching dogs, particularly larger dogs, if he feels threatened, but he may also simply pass them or say hello.
Arlo has never lived with cats and his owner does not feel he would be suitable. He can react to cats he sees while out.
Arlo would be best in an adult only home.

- Pubs, cafés, dog-friendly shops and hotels
- Travelling on public transport
He particularly enjoys having treats hidden around the home and using his nose to find them.
Arlo does not like motorbikes, backfiring cars and very noisy traffic.
The home Arlo needs
Arlo needs an experienced, understanding Beagle owner without young children who will respect his communication and give him appropriate boundaries and space.
His ideal home would understand that his growling is an important warning and that he should never be physically forced or disturbed when resting. Someone experienced with dogs who have resource-guarding or handling sensitivities would be particularly beneficial.
With the right person, Arlo has so much to offer. He is a loving, affectionate and entertaining Beagle who enjoys adventures, sniffing, learning for treats and, most of all, being with his people.
