Virgil – 6-Year-Old Tri-Colour Beagle
Virgil is an incredibly intelligent, affectionate and loyal Beagle who forms very strong bonds with the people he knows and trusts. Once you’re part of his “pack”, he is devoted, loving and happiest when close to his family. He adores curling up under a blanket on the sofa, will happily spend hours snoozing in front of a warm fire or radiator, and loves nothing more than being cosy. His family describe him as a real character with countless quirky habits that make him impossible not to love.
He enjoys long walks, hikes and secure exercise fields where he can run, explore and climb. Beach walks are a particular favourite, and he has excellent stamina for an active home. Virgil also loves playing fetch, tug games and searching for hidden treats. Training sessions are something he genuinely enjoys, especially when fishy treats, peanut butter or frozen enrichment toys are involved.
Virgil is fully house-trained, can settle in a crate when needed, travels well in the car and can be left alone for up to four hours. He currently sleeps either in his crate or in his bed in the hallway.
Virgil is exceptionally food motivated and responds very well to reward-based training. He knows a range of commands including sit, down, roll over, wait, place and leave, and enjoys learning new things. Like many Beagles, he is always on the lookout for food and will happily help himself if given the opportunity, so careful food management is essential.
Behaviour
Virgil will need an experienced confident owner who understands resource guarding and is prepared to continue managing his behaviour. He will usually exchange stolen items for high-value treats and responds well to calm, confident handling by people he trusts.
He can also be wary of strangers, particularly people wearing high-visibility clothing such as delivery drivers and bin collectors. Visitors should be introduced carefully, and Virgil is happiest being safely settled behind a gate or in his crate while new people enter the home.
Around other dogs, Virgil can be defensive if they invade his space, particularly when on lead. However, he has previously walked successfully in groups with a professional dog walker and may be able to live with another calm, respectful dog following slow and carefully managed introductions.
Virgil cannot live with cats, as he has previously chased them.
The Home Virgil Needs
Virgil is looking for an experienced, patient owner who understands that trust takes time to build. He would thrive in an adult-only home where his routines can be maintained and his boundaries respected. A secure garden with at least 6-foot fencing is essential, as Virgil is athletic enough to climb if given the opportunity.
His ideal family will enjoy long walks, enrichment activities and ongoing training, while also appreciating the affectionate, funny companion hidden beneath his guarded exterior.
