Mabel – Affectionate, Quirky 6-Year-Old Looking for an Experienced Home

Name: Mabel
DOB: July 2020 (6 years old)
Sex: Female (spayed)
Colour: Tan and white
Health: Previously had meningitis but has been in remission since 2022

About Mabel

Mabel is a quirky, affectionate beagle with a huge love of cuddles and food. She is incredibly people-focused and believes she is a lap dog, happily climbing onto your knee or snuggling under the covers in bed if given the chance.

She enjoys running, exploring outdoors and relaxing on the sofa for belly rubs. Mabel is a character who will keep her family entertained with her mischievous habits — especially her impressive ability to raid bins and bags in search of snacks!

Reason for Rehoming

Mabel is very loved by her family, but due to changing circumstances — including young children in the home and another older dog who is now unwell — it has become increasingly difficult to give her the attention, stimulation and management she needs.

She struggles with separation anxiety and when left alone can become destructive, meaning she often has to be crated for long periods. Her owners feel she would be happier in a home where she can receive more time, structure and engagement.

Training & Behaviour

  • Walked using a Halti due to pulling on the lead
  • Previously had 1-to-1 training for lead reactivity
  • Housetrained
  • Crate trained
  • Can be left for around 4 hours when with another dog
  • May become stressed if left alone without canine company
  • Travels well in the car
  • Can be let off lead in familiar areas, although recall is not always reliable

Mabel can sometimes guard food, toys, or items she has stolen and may snarl if someone tries to take them away. She responds better to trading items for treats.

Social Life

With Dogs:

  • Currently lives with an older Goldendoodle
  • Generally playful with dogs off lead, although her manners can sometimes be a little over-enthusiastic
  • Shows lead reactivity and may bark or lunge when meeting dogs on lead

With People:

  • Very affectionate with her family
  • Can snarl if shouted at or corrected harshly
  • Responds best to calm, positive handling

Cats:

  • No experience living with cats

Food & Routine

  • Fed 7am and 6pm
  • Eats Tesco kibble mixed with Tesco meat in gravy
  • Highly food motivated and would happily eat almost anything

Sleeping

  • Sleeps in a crate with the family’s other dog
  • Previously slept in bed under the covers with her owners

Likes & Personality

Loves:

  • Food (especially stolen food!)
  • Belly rubs
  • Sofa cuddles
  • Sitting on people’s laps
  • Running and exploring outdoors

Typical Beagle Mischief:

  • Opening bins
  • Raiding bags and packaging
  • Collecting “treasures”

Despite her mischievous streak, Mabel is a loving and loyal dog who enjoys being close to her people.

Ideal Home

Mabel would thrive in:

  • A home with experienced dog owners
  • Someone able to provide consistent training and structure
  • A home where she is not left alone for long periods
  • Ideally with another friendly dog for companionship
  • A secure garden
  • Owners comfortable managing lead reactivity and resource guarding

With the right environment, patience and continued positive training, Mabel will be a devoted, entertaining and very affectionate companion.
