Name: Bernard

DOB: March 2023
Sex: Male (not castrated)
Microchipped: Yes
Known health issues: None reported
About Bernard
Bernard is a lively, affectionate young beagle with all the typical beagle traits — enthusiastic, food-motivated, and eager to engage with the world around him. He enjoys his walks and is very interested in other dogs, often becoming excited when he sees them.
He has lived in a home environment and is comfortable being close to his people, often choosing to sleep at the bottom of the bed.
As you can see from some of Bernard’s photos he has some scars, they are from an accident he had before he came to us.
Home Life & Routine
- House trained: Yes
- Crate trained: Will go into a crate, but reluctantly
- Can be left alone: Yes, though he does not enjoy it
- Travelling: Used to travelling but does not like it
- Sleeps: At the bottom of the bed
Behaviour & Training
- Walks on a lead but can be quite pully when excited
- Has been off lead, but recall is unreliable
- Not destructive
- Not an escape artist
- Has not attended formal training classes
Bernard is very excited when approaching other dogs on lead and wants to get to them, but off-lead interactions have been fine.
Other Dogs, People & Children
- No aggression towards people
- Can resource guard, particularly around food
- Lives with another dog but rehoming is required due to issues with dominance and food-related resource guarding
- Could potentially live with another dog with careful management and experienced owners
- Good with children, currently living with children aged 11 and 13, though due to resource guarding he would be best suited to a home with older, dog-savvy children or adults only
- Cats: Unknown
Reason for Rehoming
Bernard is being rehomed because he is not suitable for his current household. He dominates the smaller resident dog and has food-related resource guarding issues, which could lead to conflict. There are also concerns around managing these behaviours safely in a home with children.
This decision has been made in Bernard’s best interests so he can move to an environment better suited to his needs.
Ideal Home for Bernard
Bernard would thrive in:
- An experienced beagle or hound-savvy home
- Owners confident managing resource guarding and willing to continue training
- A calm, structured household
- A home with no other dogs, or with careful introductions and management
- Older children or adults only
- A secure garden and plenty of mental stimulation
